Will a used Tesla get unsupervised FSD? What Tesla has said, and what not to pay for

Tesla's robotaxi plans make buyers wonder whether the used Tesla they are looking at will one day drive without a supervising driver, and whether to pay extra for that chance. Here is what Tesla has actually said, with dates, as of November 2026.

Updated November 2, 2026 · 5 min read

Short answer (as of November 2, 2026)

No customer car drives unsupervised today. Every Tesla you can buy runs FSD (Supervised), which needs an attentive driver; Tesla's own support page says its features "require active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomous."

On October 21, 2026 Tesla's Ashok Elluswamy said: "We suspect somewhere around Q2 next year is when we can turn on some of the first customer vehicles", inside Tesla's robotaxi geofences. That is a hope, not a program: no price, terms or list of eligible cars has been published, and an earlier target of the end of 2025 passed without it. Do not pay extra for a used Tesla because of it.

What every customer car does today

Tesla's FSD support page (July 14, 2026 capture) describes FSD (Supervised) as a feature set that can drive the car "almost anywhere" under your supervision, and adds: "None of these advanced driver assistance features make your Tesla vehicle fully autonomous or replace you as the driver." Whether FSD was bought outright or is a subscription, it is the same supervised system. Tesla's own robotaxi fleet is separate from the cars you can buy.

What Tesla has said, in date order

DateWhat was saidSource
Jul 23, 2025Elon Musk said unsupervised FSD would be "available for incentivized personal use by the end of this year in certain geographies", and that he was "confident that by the end of this year, within a number of cities in the U.S., it will be available to end users."The Auto Wire on Yahoo Finance, Oct 29, 2026
Jan 18, 2026Musk replied "Yup" on X to a post saying AI4 does not need better hardware for unsupervised driving. A social media reply, not a Tesla announcement.Benzinga on Yahoo Finance, Jan 21, 2026
Apr 22, 2026Musk: "Hardware 3 simply does not have the capability to achieve unsupervised FSD."TechCrunch
Oct 21, 2026Elluswamy: "We suspect somewhere around Q2 next year is when we can turn on some of the first customer vehicles." The software in the Cybercab and the Model Y is "the same", planned to reach customers in FSD v15. The remaining requirement is that customer Model Ys can be part of Tesla's geofences and fleet management. Not a Tesla App, Oct 23, 2026; Electron Motion, Oct 22, 2026

Read the last row carefully. Elluswamy said "some of the first customer vehicles", joining Tesla's robotaxi fleet, in the places Tesla has mapped. Not a Tesla App reads that as unsupervised FSD limited to select areas of the US at first, and notes that it is the first time Tesla has given a date for owners adding their cars to the Robotaxi network.

What Tesla has not said

Reports of the October call do not include answers to the questions a buyer would need:

  • Which cars. The call spoke of customer Model Ys. Not a Tesla App writes that Tesla has long said Model 3 and Model Y owners would be able to add cars to the network. No model years or hardware list has been given.
  • Price and terms. Electron Motion notes Tesla gave no price. Not a Tesla App says Tesla has not shared how revenue sharing will work, or how charging, cleaning and fleet management would be handled for owner-provided cars.
  • Owner use. Neither report says whether an owner could use unsupervised mode on their own trips, or only while the car is in the fleet.
  • What it attaches to. The reports we read do not say whether it would come with a bought FSD (Supervised) package, a subscription, or neither.
  • When, exactly. "We suspect" and "some of the first" are the words used. Not a Tesla App adds that, given the date, Tesla could start with a later point release of v15.

The hardware question

HW3: Tesla says it cannot (April 22 quote above). The upgrade story is in Can a Tesla with HW3 be upgraded to AI4?; as of November 2026 it has no price or date.

AI4 (HW4): Musk indicated on X in January that it needs no better hardware for unsupervised driving. That is an informal reply, and Tesla's October remarks about customer cars did not, in the reports we read, name a hardware version. Check which computer a car has under Controls > Software > Additional Vehicle Information (see HW3 vs HW4).

What it means when you buy a used Tesla

  • Do not pay a premium for unsupervised driving. There is no program to buy into, and the earlier date given for customers (end of 2025) passed. A seller asking extra for "robotaxi potential" is asking you to pay for a hope.
  • Value FSD (Supervised) for what it does now. Use the break-even rule in how much FSD is worth: an owned package replaces a $99 monthly subscription (how subscribing works).
  • If this matters to you, look at AI4. It is the only hardware Musk has said anything encouraging about; he has ruled out HW3. Verify it on the screen, not from the listing.
  • Expect conditions. Tesla described fleet participation in terms of its geofences and fleet management. The terms have not been published, so none of it can be part of a fair price.
  • Wait for it in writing. Watch Tesla's support pages and the release notes of FSD v15 for anything beyond remarks on a call.

Questions buyers ask

Can a Tesla I can buy drive itself without a driver today?

No. Every Tesla sold to customers runs FSD (Supervised), and Tesla's support page says these features do not make the vehicle autonomous or replace the driver. Tesla's own robotaxi fleet is separate.

When will customer cars get unsupervised FSD?

Tesla's Ashok Elluswamy said on October 21, 2026: "We suspect somewhere around Q2 next year is when we can turn on some of the first customer vehicles." That is a suspicion, for some cars, inside Tesla's robotaxi zones. An earlier target of the end of 2025 was not met.

Will HW3 cars get it?

Elon Musk said on April 22, 2026 that "Hardware 3 simply does not have the capability to achieve unsupervised FSD." Tesla has talked about upgrades for HW3 owners who bought FSD but has published no price, date or terms.

Should I pay more for a used Tesla because it might get unsupervised FSD?

No. Tesla has not published which cars, what it will cost or what the terms are. Price a car for the supervised FSD it has today, and check the hardware on the car's screen.
